About the Role

PRASA Corporate is seeking three qualified and dynamic Occupational Health Practitioners to join our team at Umjantshi House, Braamfontein. In this role, you will take full responsibility for the design, implementation, and management of the Occupational Health Programme, ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for employees.

As an Occupational Health Practitioner, your expertise will play a pivotal role in identifying, minimizing, and managing occupational health risks. You will focus on safeguarding employee wellness while optimizing costs, resources, and productivity through effective health management strategies.

Key Purpose

The successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive occupational health strategies aligned with PRASA’s objectives.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and railway industry health and safety regulations.

  • Promote a healthy workplace by identifying risk factors, conducting surveillance programs, and designing intervention strategies to reduce workplace hazards.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Matric / Grade 12 certificate.

  • Diploma in General Nursing, Midwifery, Community Nursing, and Psychiatry.

  • B-Tech Degree in Occupational Health (or equivalent).

  • Valid driver’s license for site visits and depot inspections.

  • Current and valid registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC), with Occupational Health registered as an additional qualification.

  • Professional Indemnity Cover (mandatory).

  • Active membership with SASOHN (South African Society of Occupational Health Nursing Practitioners).

  • Certificates in Audiometry and Spirometry.

  • Valid registration with SASOHN as an Audiometrist.

Key Performance Areas (KPAs)

1. Health Risk Management

  • Conduct health risk analyses to identify potential hazards within the workplace.

  • Monitor occupational exposures and recommend effective control measures.

  • Keep updated with industry-specific health legislation and ensure compliance.

2. Medical Surveillance

  • Perform a full range of occupational health medical assessments, including:

    • Pre-employment

    • Pre-placement

    • Periodic

    • Exit

    • Post-incident and transfer medicals

  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee health records in line with company policy and legal requirements.

3. Emergency Preparedness and Response

  • Act as the first responder to workplace medical emergencies.

  • Provide appropriate interventions and referrals to ensure swift and effective treatment.

4. Health Promotion and Employee Wellness

  • Plan and execute health awareness campaigns and wellness initiatives.

  • Conduct depot visits to engage with staff and promote proactive health management.

  • Manage injury-on-duty (IOD) cases and develop strategies to minimize compensation claims.

5. Compliance and Audit Participation

  • Ensure strict adherence to PRASA’s policies, procedures, and safety protocols.

  • Participate actively in internal and external audits, providing accurate data and recommendations.

6. HIV/AIDS and Chronic Illness Management

  • Provide counselling, testing, and follow-up care for employees living with HIV/AIDS or chronic illnesses.

  • Assist with dispensing or arranging ARVs and managing chronic condition treatment plans.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of occupational health principles, policies, and best practices.

  • Ability to manage multiple health programs and projects simultaneously.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with staff at all levels.

  • High attention to detail and a commitment to confidentiality.

  • Ability to work under pressure, responding effectively to emergencies.

  • Proficiency in health data analysis, reporting, and documentation.
