Job Purpose
The Gardener will be responsible for maintaining and developing Rand Water’s landscaped areas, gardens, and outdoor facilities. This role involves performing a variety of horticultural tasks, operating equipment and tools, and ensuring that the surrounding environment meets high standards of cleanliness, safety, and visual appeal.
Working as part of a team, the Gardener will carry out labour-intensive tasks under supervision and support Rand Water’s environmental management objectives by maintaining healthy, well-kept green spaces across the Bulk Water Distribution sites and servitudes.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following minimum criteria:

Educational Qualification: Grade 10 or N3 certificate.

Experience: At least six (6) months of relevant experience in gardening, landscaping, or a similar maintenance environment advantageous.

Technical Ability: Ability to operate horticultural machinery and equipment such as:
-
Brush cutters
-
Lawnmowers
-
Knapsack sprayers
-

Physical Fitness: Must be capable of performing labour-intensive tasks in outdoor conditions.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
As part of the Operations team, the successful candidate will perform a variety of duties that contribute to the upkeep and functionality of Rand Water’s properties. Key responsibilities include:

Landscape and Site Maintenance
-
Maintain the overall cleanliness, health, and appearance of lawns, gardens, and green spaces.

Regularly cut grass, trim hedges, and remove weeds within Bulk Water Distribution reservoirs and servitude areas.
-
Ensure that plants, shrubs, and trees are properly watered, pruned, and maintained.

Planting and Cultivation

Assist in planting flowers, trees, shrubs, and other vegetation according to landscape design plans.

Apply fertilizers, compost, and mulch to enhance soil quality and plant growth.

Support replanting and seasonal landscaping projects as directed by supervisors.

Cleaning and Upkeep
-
Clean, sweep, and tidy up surrounding areas, pathways, and facility grounds.

Collect and properly dispose of garden waste, debris, and litter.

Maintain storage areas and ensure tools are cleaned and safely stored after use.

Loading and Offloading Tasks

Assist in loading and offloading goods, plants, machinery, and horticultural materials.

Provide manual labour support during deliveries or site preparations.

Decorative and Event Support

Support the setup of decorations and displays during company events or special functions.

Assist with temporary landscaping or facility presentation improvements when required.

Safety and Environmental Compliance

Follow all health and safety procedures to ensure a safe working environment.

Report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or environmental hazards promptly.

Practice environmentally friendly methods in gardening and waste disposal.

Proficient in the use and care of hand tools, lawnmowers, brush cutters, and similar horticultural equipment.

Basic understanding of plant care, soil maintenance, and seasonal gardening techniques.
